The Ruby In The Smoke is set in the 1870's when young Sally Lockhart (Piper) finds a message from her father, joint owner of a shipping firm and who had recently died in a shipwreck. It tells Sally to beware of the Seven Blessings, which although meaning nothing to her scares plenty of others. Sally teams up with Jim Taylor, a and the trail leads to the Ruby of Agrapur.

The Shadow In The North is set a few years later, Sally is now a consoltant, but a strange case of a sunken ship and Lloyds of London being suspicious, sets her off on her investigating again. She also crosses the path of the Garland Detective Agency, who have a very strange case involving a magician!
