Five years ago Daniel Pearl (Futterman) is a reporter investigating shoe-bomber Richard Reid. He doesn't suspect that it is a trap when go-betweens arrange a meeting with a secret source in Karachi, however he vanishes. His pregnant wife Mariane (Jolie) becomes increasingly anxious as time passes. Based on real life events this focusses on the worries that beset Mariane, and also the hunt to find Daniel.

Those who remember this real life story will know that there is not a happy ending. It is up to the director to ensure that a public who is aware of the real life events to put some tension into the story. This is achieved by building up the roles of the supporting characters in order for them to take the strain off Mariane's attempts to keep the media interested around the globe.
